Fixing macOS Boot Issues After an Update

Issue Description 

After a macOS update, the Mac may fail to boot, restart repeatedly, or stay stuck at the Apple logo. 

Common Causes 

  • Interrupted update process 
  • Incompatible third-party extensions 
  • Corrupt system files 
  • Low disk space during update 

Step-by-Step Solution 

Step 1: Force Restart the Mac 

  • Hold the Power button until the Mac shuts down 
  • Wait 10 seconds, then power it back on 

 

Step 2: Boot into Safe Mode 

Apple Silicon Macs: 

  • Shut down 
  • Hold Power until Startup Options appear 
  • Select startup disk → hold Shift → click Continue in Safe Mode 

Intel Macs: 

  • Power on and immediately hold Shift 
  • Release when login screen appears 

 

Step 3: Run Disk Utility First Aid 

  • In Safe Mode or Recovery: 
  • Open Disk Utility 
  • Select Macintosh HD 
  • Click First Aid 

 

Step 4: Reinstall macOS (Without Data Loss) 

  • Restart into macOS Recovery 
  • Select Reinstall macOS 
  • Follow on-screen instructions 
     This does not erase data
