How to Protect macOS from Fake Software Update Prompts

Issue Description 

Fake update pop-ups trick users into installing malware disguised as macOS updates. 

Common Causes 

  • Malicious websites 
  • Browser notification abuse 
  • Adware 

Step-by-Step Solution 

Step 1: Know the Only Real Update Location 

  • Real updates appear ONLY at: 
  • System Settings → General → Software Update 

 

Step 2: Close Fake Prompts Safely 

  • Press Command + Q or Force Quit browser 
  • Never click update buttons in browsers 

 

Step 3: Disable Browser Notifications 

  • Safari → Settings → Websites → Notifications 
  • Remove all unknown sites 

 

Step 4: Scan Installed Apps 

  • Remove unknown “updater” apps from Applications
