How to Fix Windows 11 Not Booting After an Update

Issue Description

After installing a Windows 11 update, the computer may fail to boot and get stuck on a black screen, spinning dots, Windows logo, or enter an automatic repair loop. This usually happens when system files or boot components are damaged during the update process.

Common Causes

  • Interrupted or failed Windows update
  • Corrupted boot configuration files
  • Incompatible or faulty device drivers
  • Low disk space during update installation

Step-by-Step Solution

Step 1: Force Windows Recovery Mode

  • Press and hold the power button to turn off the PC
  • Turn it back on and force shut down again when the Windows logo appears
  • Repeat this 2–3 times until you see “Preparing Automatic Repair”
  • When the recovery screen appears, select Advanced options

If recovery does not appear, boot using a Windows installation USB

Step 2: Run Startup Repair

  • Go to Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Repair
  • Select your Windows account
  • Enter your password if prompted
  • Wait for Windows to scan and fix startup issues

If Windows boots normally after this, stop here

Step 3: Uninstall the Problematic Update

  • Go to Advanced options → Uninstall Updates
  • Choose Uninstall latest quality update first
  • Restart the PC
  • If that fails, repeat and select Uninstall latest feature update

️ Do NOT uninstall both at once unless necessary

Step 4: Boot into Safe Mode

  • Go to Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart
  • Press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking
  • Once logged in:
  • Open Device Manager
  • Expand Display adapters and Storage controllers
  • Right-click recent drivers and choose Roll back driver if available

Step 5: Repair System Files Manually

  • From Advanced options, open Command Prompt
  • Run the following commands one at a time:
  • sfc /scannow
  • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • Close Command Prompt and restart

Step 6: Use System Restore (If Available)

  • Go to Advanced options → System Restore
  • Select a restore point dated before the update
  • Confirm and allow the system to restart
