Issue Description
After installing a Windows 11 update, the computer may fail to boot and get stuck on a black screen, spinning dots, Windows logo, or enter an automatic repair loop. This usually happens when system files or boot components are damaged during the update process.
Common Causes
- Interrupted or failed Windows update
- Corrupted boot configuration files
- Incompatible or faulty device drivers
- Low disk space during update installation
Step-by-Step Solution
Step 1: Force Windows Recovery Mode
- Press and hold the power button to turn off the PC
- Turn it back on and force shut down again when the Windows logo appears
- Repeat this 2–3 times until you see “Preparing Automatic Repair”
- When the recovery screen appears, select Advanced options
If recovery does not appear, boot using a Windows installation USB
Step 2: Run Startup Repair
- Go to Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Repair
- Select your Windows account
- Enter your password if prompted
- Wait for Windows to scan and fix startup issues
✔ If Windows boots normally after this, stop here
Step 3: Uninstall the Problematic Update
- Go to Advanced options → Uninstall Updates
- Choose Uninstall latest quality update first
- Restart the PC
- If that fails, repeat and select Uninstall latest feature update
⚠️ Do NOT uninstall both at once unless necessary
Step 4: Boot into Safe Mode
- Go to Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart
- Press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking
- Once logged in:
- Open Device Manager
- Expand Display adapters and Storage controllers
- Right-click recent drivers and choose Roll back driver if available
Step 5: Repair System Files Manually
- From Advanced options, open Command Prompt
- Run the following commands one at a time:
- sfc /scannow
- DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Close Command Prompt and restart
Step 6: Use System Restore (If Available)
- Go to Advanced options → System Restore
- Select a restore point dated before the update
- Confirm and allow the system to restart
