How to Set Up a Local Network and Share Files Between Windows PCs

Issue Description 

File sharing may fail between Windows PCs on the same network. 

Common Causes 

  • Network discovery disabled 
  • File sharing turned off 
  • Firewall restrictions 

Step-by-Step Solution 

Step 1: Enable Network Discovery 

  • Open Control Panel → Network and Sharing Center 
  • Click Change advanced sharing settings 
  • Turn ON Network discovery and File and printer sharing 

 

Step 2: Share a Folder 

  • Right-click the folder → Properties → Sharing tab 
  • Click Share 
  • Choose users → Set permission level → Share 

 

Step 3: Access Shared Folder 

  • On another PC, open File Explorer 
  • Type \ComputerName in address bar 
  • Press Enter 

 

Step 4: Allow Through Firewall 

  • Open Windows Security → Firewall & network protection 
  • Allow File and Printer Sharing
