How to Troubleshoot Slow File Copy or Transfer Speeds on Windows

Issue Description

Copying or transferring files takes unusually long, even between local drives or over a network.

Common Causes

  • Slow storage (HDD vs SSD)
  • USB port or cable limitations
  • Background disk usage
  • Antivirus scanning files during transfer

Step-by-Step Solution

Step 1: Identify Where the Bottleneck Is

  • Copy a file within the same drive
  • Then copy between different drives
  • Compare speeds to identify disk or connection limits

Step 2: Use a Faster Connection

  • Plug external drives into USB 3.0/USB-C ports
  • Avoid USB hubs when possible

Step 3: Disable Real-Time Scanning Temporarily

  • Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection
  • Temporarily disable Real-time protection
  • Retry file transfer
    ️ Re-enable protection after testing

Step 4: Check Disk Health

  • Open Command Prompt (Admin)
  • Run:

chkdsk /f

Step 5: Close Background Disk Usage

  • Open Task Manager → Processes
  • Sort by Disk
  • End unnecessary disk-heavy tasks

  • Upgrade HDD to SSD
  • Use Robocopy for large transfers

Prevention & Best Practices

Avoid multitasking during large file transfers.
