How to Fix File Permission Denied Errors on Windows

Issue Description 

Permission errors block access to files or folders even when logged in as administrator. 

Common Causes 

  • Incorrect ownership 
  • Restricted NTFS permissions 

Step-by-Step Solution 

Step 1: Take Ownership 

  • Right-click file/folder → Properties → Security → Advanced 
  • Click Change next to Owner 
  • Select your account → OK 

 

Step 2: Grant Permissions 

  • In Security → Edit 
  • Add your user account 
  • Grant Full control 

 

Step 3: Apply Changes 

  • Check Replace all child object permissions 
  • Click Apply 

 

Step 4: Retry Access 

  • Close File Explorer 
  • Reopen and test file access
