How to Disable Automatic Driver Updates in Windows

Issue Description 

Windows may automatically install driver updates that cause hardware issues or instability. 

Common Causes 

  • Windows Update installing generic drivers 
  • Driver conflicts with manufacturer software 

Step-by-Step Solution 

Step 1: Disable via System Settings 

  • Press Windows + R, type sysdm.cpl, press Enter 
  • Go to Hardware tab → Device Installation Settings 
  • Select No (your device might not work as expected) 
  • Click Save Changes 

 

Step 2: Disable via Group Policy (Pro Editions) 

  • Press Windows + R → gpedit.msc 
  • Go to Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Windows Update 
  • Enable Do not include drivers with Windows Updates 

 

Step 3: Restart the PC 

  • Restart to apply changes
