How to Fix Corrupt Boot Configuration (BCD) on Windows

Issue Description 

Corrupt Boot Configuration Data (BCD) can prevent Windows from starting properly. 

Common Causes 

  • Power loss during updates 
  • Disk errors 
  • Dual-boot misconfiguration 

Step-by-Step Solution 

Step 1: Boot Into Recovery 

  • Boot from Windows USB or force restart 2–3 times 
  • Select Advanced options → Troubleshoot → Command Prompt 

 

Step 2: Repair Boot Records 

Run these commands one by one: 

bootrec /fixmbr 

bootrec /fixboot 

bootrec /scanos 

bootrec /rebuildbcd 

 

Step 3: Restart and Test 

  • Exit Command Prompt 
  • Restart Windows 

 

Step 4: Use Startup Repair (If Needed) 

  • From Advanced options, run Startup Repair
