How to Fix File Explorer Crashing or Not Responding

Issue Description 

File Explorer may freeze, crash, or restart unexpectedly. 

Common Causes 

  • Corrupt cache 
  • Third-party context menu extensions 
  • Damaged system files 

Step-by-Step Solution 

Step 1: Restart File Explorer 

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc 
  • Right-click Windows Explorer → Restart 

 

Step 2: Clear Explorer History 

  • Open File Explorer → Options 
  • Under Privacy, click Clear 

 

Step 3: Disable Third-Party Extensions 

  • Download ShellExView 
  • Disable non-Microsoft shell extensions 
  • Restart Windows 

 

Step 4: Repair System Files 

Run in Command Prompt (Admin): 

sfc /scannow
