How to Fix Windows Update Stuck at 0% or During Installation

Issue Description 

Windows Update may freeze at 0% or stall mid-installation. 

Common Causes 

  • Corrupted update cache 
  • Insufficient disk space 
  • Network interruptions 

Step-by-Step Solution 

Step 1: Restart the PC 

  • Allow Windows to restart normally 
  • Retry Windows Update once 

 

Step 2: Free Disk Space 

  • Open Settings → System → Storage 
  • Remove temporary files 
  • Ensure at least 15–20 GB free space 

 

Step 3: Clear Update Cache 

  • Open Command Prompt (Admin) 
  • Run: 
  • net stop wuauserv 
  • net stop bits 
  • Delete contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution 
  • Restart services: 
  • net start wuauserv 
  • net start bits 

 

Step 4: Run Update Troubleshooter 

  • Open Settings → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters 
  • Run Windows Update
