How to Identify Fake Microsoft Support Calls and Emails

Issue Description 

Scammers impersonate Microsoft support through phone calls, emails, or pop-ups to steal money or gain access. 

Common Causes 

  • Caller ID spoofing 
  • Fake email domains 
  • Fear-based messaging 

Step-by-Step Solution 

Step 1: Recognize the Scam 

  • Microsoft never calls users unsolicited 
  • Microsoft never asks for passwords or payment 

 

Step 2: Verify the Source 

  • Check email sender domain (must end in @microsoft.com) 
  • Do not trust phone numbers in pop-ups 

 

Step 3: Stop Interaction Immediately 

  • Hang up the call 
  • Close browser using Alt + F4 
  • Disconnect internet temporarily if needed 

 

Step 4: Scan the PC 

  • Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection 
  • Run Full scan, then Offline scan
