How to Recover from a Corrupted Windows Registry

Issue Description 

A corrupted Windows Registry can prevent Windows from booting or cause frequent crashes and errors. 

Common Causes 

  • Improper software uninstallation 
  • Malware infections 
  • Forced shutdowns 
  • Manual registry edits 

Step-by-Step Solution 

Step 1: Boot Into Windows Recovery 

  • Power on the PC 
  • Force shut down 2–3 times until Automatic Repair appears 
  • Select Advanced options → Troubleshoot → Advanced options 

 

Step 2: Use System Restore 

  • Select System Restore 
  • Choose a restore point before the issue 
  • Click Next → Finish 
  • Allow the system to restart 

 

Step 3: Run System File Repairs 

  • From Advanced options, open Command Prompt 
  • Run: 
  • sfc /scannow 
  • DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth 

 

Step 4: Restore Registry Backup (Advanced) 

  • In Command Prompt, navigate to: 
  • C:WindowsSystem32ConfigRegBack 
  • Copy backup files to the Config folder (only if backups exist)
