How to Set Up Dual-Boot (Windows + Linux) Safely

Issue Description 

Improper dual-boot setup can overwrite the Windows bootloader or cause data loss. 

Common Causes 

  • No disk partitioning plan 
  • Incorrect bootloader installation 

Step-by-Step Solution 

Step 1: Back Up Important Data 

  • Back up Windows data to external drive 

 

Step 2: Create Free Space 

  • Open Disk Management 
  • Shrink Windows partition to create unallocated space 

 

Step 3: Disable Fast Startup 

  • Open Control Panel → Power Options 
  • Disable Fast startup 

 

Step 4: Install Linux 

  • Boot from Linux USB 
  • Choose Install alongside Windows 
  • Select unallocated space 

 

Step 5: Verify Boot Menu 

  • Restart and confirm GRUB menu shows both OS options
