Solving Finder Search Issues on macOS

Issue Description 

Finder search returns incomplete or no results even when files exist. 

Common Causes 

  • Corrupt Spotlight index 
  • Incorrect search scope 
  • Privacy exclusions 

Step-by-Step Solution 

Step 1: Set Search Scope Correctly 

  • Open Finder 
  • In search bar, select This Mac instead of Current Folder 

 

Step 2: Rebuild Spotlight Index 

  • System Settings → Siri & Spotlight → Spotlight Privacy 
  • Add Macintosh HD, then remove it 

 

Step 3: Restart Spotlight Service 

  • Open Terminal 

sudo mdutil -E / 

 

Step 4: Restart Mac 

  • Test Finder search again
